Briar Cliff Men's Basketball: Aiming for a Resurgent 2025-26 Season
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) - After a disappointing 14-15 season, the Briar Cliff men's basketball team is determined to turn things around and reclaim their winning streak. This marks the team's first sub-.500 finish since the 2020-21 season, a stark contrast to their previous achievements.
Despite graduating two of their top three scorers, Matthew Stilwill and Jamison Helmers, who were both named to the GPAC First Team, the team is far from defeated. BCU welcomes back a few seasoned players, including Blake Sindelar and Jaxson Wingert, who are ready to take on new roles.
Blake Sindelar, the team's leading returning scorer, averaged an impressive 13.9 points per game with a 47% shooting rate. Meanwhile, Jaxson Wingert, a sophomore, demonstrated his potential by starting all 29 games last season, contributing 11.7 points and over four rebounds per game.
The team's confidence is palpable as they step into the 2025-26 season. They are determined to make a statement and climb to the top of the conference.
"Our focus is on the daily habits that will propel us to our goals," says Briar Cliff head coach Mark Svagera. "We aim to compete at the conference's pinnacle and secure a spot in the NAIA National Tournament. We're committed to our training and believe we're ready for the challenge."
Wingert adds, "Several players are stepping up, and our new transfers are making a significant impact. Even those who won't play much this year are dedicated to practicing and helping us improve. We feel prepared and confident about our prospects."
Briar Cliff's season opener is set for October 24th at home against Mount Mercy, tipping off at 7:30 p.m. The team is eager to showcase their growth and reclaim their winning reputation.
